Why I Started Glide Slope Studios: A Mission to Elevate Virtual Aviation

Flight simulation has advanced significantly over the past few decades. With the launch of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020, sim pilots finally gained access to an ultra-realistic global platform — one where weather, terrain, and aircraft fidelity have reached breathtaking new heights. But as we logged hours in the virtual skies, one thing became clear: while the visuals had improved, many regional and general aviation (GA) airports remained neglected or generic.

That’s where Glide Slope Studios comes in.

I launched Glide Slope Studios with a clear mission: to handcraft high-quality, performance-optimized scenery for Microsoft Flight Simulator, with a special focus on the kinds of airports that real pilots use every day — business aviation hubs, regional connectors, and general aviation fields across the United States. My goal is simple: to elevate every takeoff, approach, and landing for the discerning virtual pilot.

Rooted in Aviation

Glide Slope Studios was founded by me — a passionate aviator and flight simulator enthusiast who saw an opportunity to enhance the realism of underrepresented airports in the simulation world. As a real-world pilot and long-time MSFS user, I understand what makes an airport feel authentic. I work closely with talented 3D artists who share the same commitment to accuracy and immersion. Together, we obsess over the details that others often overlook: taxiway signage, night lighting, hangar placement, and even how accurately the scenery reflects the airport’s metadata.

That last part matters more than many realize. We design our airports to work seamlessly with the broader MSFS ecosystem — ensuring compatibility with AI traffic, air traffic control add-ons like BeyondATC and SayIntentions, and charting services like Navigraph. We want our scenery not only to look great but also to function perfectly in a comprehensive flight simulation environment.

Starting with KJQF: Concord-Padgett Regional Airport

We chose to begin our journey with KJQF — Concord-Padgett Regional Airport in North Carolina — because it embodies everything we care about. It’s a fast-growing regional airport serving general aviation, corporate flights, and even scheduled commercial service from carriers like Allegiant and Avelo. It also happens to be home to the Hendrick Motorsports hangar, a detail we’ve modeled with care.

Our version of KJQF includes custom-built terminals and hangars, accurate taxiway layouts, detailed ground markings, animated elements, and immersive night lighting. It’s built from the ground up to offer a true-to-life experience, whether you’re flying a TBM 930, a CJ4, or a charter 737.

Why Focus on the U.S. — and Especially the Southeast

While the global MSFS community is vast, we believe there is a special need for more detailed, high-quality airports throughout the United States — especially in areas such as the Southeast, where general aviation (GA) traffic is high, but scenery coverage remains sparse. Our roadmap features a mix of payware and freeware releases designed to draw attention to underappreciated yet highly active regional airports.

We’re starting local, but our vision is national. From the Carolinas to California, we want to tell the story of American aviation — one airport at a time.

Built for the Community

Glide Slope Studios isn’t just a scenery shop. It’s a platform to support the sim community we love. As we grow, we are committed to providing transparent development updates, community feedback loops, and potential freeware releases that are currently under consideration.

Our team is excited to collaborate with pilots, streamers, and developers to help shape the future. If you’ve got ideas or requests, we want to hear them. After all, the sky’s the limit — and with the right scenery, it’s even better on approach.

We’re incredibly grateful for the early interest and encouragement we’ve received from the community. Whether you’ve followed our development journey, connected with us on social media, or offered words of support — thank you. We invite you to join us on this journey as we work to bring the U.S. flight sim world to life, one handcrafted airport at a time.
